Making a Positive Impression

First impressions matter, especially when meeting employers. It takes less than 10 seconds for an employer to evaluate you when you meet them for the first time. In this short time, the employer may form opinions about you based on your appearance, style of dress, and mannerisms. Whether it's right or not, first impressions can make or break a candidate's chances in landing their dream job and the clothing you choose has the potential to impact employers’ perceptions of you.

Your outfit choice for an interview or typical work day will vary based on industry and even company. The traditional recommendation is to wear conservative colors (gray, black, or navy blue); however, other industries may embrace brighter colors or more informal attire. In most cases, you will be better off dressing professionally than being underdressed.

We urge you to do your research on your specific industry and organization.

Students should plan to wear corporate attire and or business attire to all events with an employer unless otherwise instructed by the employer.

If you're ever unsure about a clothing choice, don't hesitate to stop by the Emory Career Center for advice.

Clothing Closet

Do you need professional clothes for an upcoming career fair, interview, or networking event? Clothing from the Emory University Career Center Clothing Closet can be rented for a variety of career related opportunities.

The Emory Clothing Closet was created to provide Emory students the ability to borrow clothing for career fairs, interviews or other professional and social events. The closet was made possible due to local community donations, generous funding provided by Enterprise Rent-a-Car and the College Council.

Students may check out business casual and business professional attire by stopping by the Career Center from 8:30am-4:00pm during the Fall and Spring semester when class is in session. Please note that we cannot guarantee the size or type of clothing you need will be in stock.

Please bring your Student ID with you.

Please note, that due to demand there will be a wait time, please plan accordingly to give yourself enough time to try on clothing. The Clothing Closet operates under a first come first serve.

There is no cost to check out any attire items.

However, items must be returned within 5 business days and all items must be returned dry cleaned (in its dry clean packaged).  If students do not returned the items by their due date and or items are not dry cleaned students will incur a charge.

The Career Center is not responsible for picking up or dropping off Clothing items (no exceptions will be made). It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they return items on time and dry cleaned to the Career Center.
